The City Council of the City of Saint Charles consists of ten members, with one representative from each ward. The ten wards of the City are established geographically with an approximate equal population in each ward. Council members are elected to serve three year terms.

Responsibilities of St. Charles City Council

The City Council is the legislative body of the City responsible for establishing local laws known as ordinances, along with the allocation of funds contained in the budget of the City, and the establishment of the compensation and benefits for approximately 500 part-time and full-time city employees. The Council also performs an array of other functions such as setting goals and policy for City government, approving City programs, establishing the Capital Improvement Plan, and encouraging economic development. In addition, Councilmembers are assigned to the various boards and commissions to act as Council Liaisons.

Meetings of Council

The City Council meets in Regular Session on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers (Fourth Floor) at St. Charles City Hall, 200 North Second Street. In addition, the Council meets for a work session at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the Council Chambers.

The Council elects one of its members as President of the Council, who presides over all meetings. The Regular and work sessions are broadcast over Cable TV on Channel 20.
